on 30 Jun 1816 in Row, Parish of, Dumbartonshire.7 [[Baptism note: BR1/CR1 is a copy of a hand written
extract from the Register of Births of the Parish of Row].
[IGI: SCN 1041002 Also has Christening of John CampBLE vwith Parents John Reid
and Marion Whyte]]. He c 1826 to c 1846 in Glasgow area. [Misc note:
from a speech on 8 May 1876 to Annual Meeting of Scottish Temperance League,
we learn the following: --- not a native of Glasgow but to Glasgow. Implies speaking
in Glasgow. ---- at school 50 years ago this month I made my first appearance.
--- I knew more of Glasgow at that time and for the 20 subsequent years than
I do of it at the present. When exactly was he at University and how long to
take a degree and then qualify as a Surgeon? see note ref to Amble in 1847]
In 1847 he was a General Practitioner in Amble then Newbiggin.8 [[Occupation note: Glasgow University Archives](But
could be another: see Education note)(1851 as GP in Amble aged 34)
[From Book of Poems: Inside the back cover is glued "A New Song Entitled
A Day in the Woods; Or, The Bachelors' Party" etc.
This mentions several Doctors and where they came from. It implies he (Reid)
and another (Duncan *) came from Amble and that he (Reid) was late of Felton.
Craig ** came from Newbiggin (and had sometime been in "Foreign lands")
At the end is "Entered at Monk's Hall, Friar's Court, Nun's Lane, Monkchester"

He lived in Amble about 1851.9
[Resided at note: 1871 Amble] About 1851 he was a General Practitioner in Amble.9 [Occupation note: 1851 as 'Graduate
in Medicine of the Glasgow Un engaged in General Practice'] He was educated
1831 (matriculated)(Too young?) in University of Glasgow. [Education
note: Read Ethics: Update: Nov 01. We now think this may have referred to another
Reid](UPDATE Nov 2006. Qualfied as Surgeon at Glasgow in April 1852, if my Latin
is OK!)(from a news clip of about 1876 it refers to 30 years ago when he submitted
a thesis on delirium tremens in 1846) He graduated in Apr 1852 in Glasgow University.10 [Graduation note: as a Surgeon]
He lived in Newbiggin, Well Meadows (House) about 1861.11 About 1861 he was a M.D. of Glasgow University.11 He lived in Newbiggin, Well Meadows
House about 1871.12 [Resided
at note: Isabella Shields b Northumberland, Bingley, aged 16 as a General Servant
lived there also] About 1871 he was a General Practioner in Newbiggin.12 [Occupation note: as 'General

Glasgow. Land Owner employing 1 man'](fmp image is clearer but xxxx is Hale
or Foale ??) He signed a will on 19 Oct 1874 in Newbiggin.13 [Will note: we have a photocopy] He lived in Newbiggin,
Well Meadows House about 1881.14,15 [Living note: 1881 Census, living
at Well Meadows House, Newbiggin in Morpeth. His wife is not listed. See her
note]. About 1881 he was a General Practitioner in Newbiggin.16 He died on 10 Mar 1882 in Newbiggin, Well Meadow House.17,18

raised for a stained glass window for the local Presbyterian Church, in Newbiggin,

We have seen the window and the words are "Go and do thou likewise".

[[Burial note: the Tombstone is located south of the east window of St Mary,
Woodhorn. The Inscription is "In Loving Remembrance of John Campbell Reid
M.D. For 30 years Medical Practitioner at Newbiggin by the Sea, Born 14 June
1816 died 10 March 1882. The Beloved Physician."
On the plinth is "Marian Reid Died 16 Aug.1853 age 4 days, Marian Alma Reid
Died 5 June 1855 age 7 months, Julia J. Reid Died in Infancy" Under on base
"R or P Gibson Woodhorn" - the sculptor.]

a Private Resident: Millons William, Wellmeadow House. Who or what was he to
be mentioned? ? Lodger or owner? No other familiar names here or in Commercial.
A Mystery. He is also on electoral roll there in 1890 but not as owning the property)(Was
it owned by B Reid, living in Gibson Street in 1891?).

Inside the inner cover is glued "Address to The Rev Alexander Hoy -----
On the 5th December 1848" etc.
P 1 "Ode to Hope written when 19 years of age being my third attempt at
Poesy"
P 3 "Written 1833 being first effort at Rhyme. To Mary Mc(?)" A bit
like an upper case swirly S joined closely to a lower case j. Fancy F?
P 8 "Written 1834 on being asked what like Margaret A (?) was?"
P 11 "To JG written in an Inn in Lancashire"
Near end: at top right is "A Hoy" then start of next line " The
Monkshood so gallant called out" etc.

On the back of this is a pencil poem (dated 1858 (?)) and I cannot read or see
most of it.
Also on inner back cover left side, are the names "Doth (?) Ann C/K arrywon
(?) and under it "Ann Caryone"

He is described as a Surgeon.
His Father, John REID, is a Surgeon in Royal Navy.

James Baker, Clerk etc. etc. lawfully constituted by Edward, Lord Bishop of Duham,
greets JCR of Newbiggin in the Parish of Woodham, and BH of Felton, County of
Northumberland and Diocese of Durham, and gives permission to marry.

She lived in Newbiggin, Gibson Street about 1891.25 She lived about 1901.26 [Resided at note: 1901 as a widow with her daughter,
Margaret Anne Hoy, also a widow, and her grandson Campbell] She died on 13 Apr
1902 in Newbiggin, Campbell House.27

Dr J Reid went to London to 1851 exhibition. CH C(G) says If so, they were not
yet married and would either have been chaperoned or stayed with a relative or
friend. If her mother went with them and stayed with an unknown sister (who may
have married a Richardson, see 1881 WT R from London staying as a nephew in
Northumberland) she may have died there. She died in1851 in London (see Melrose
on web record)]
