[General note: Her name is not confirmed. There are various spellings of this name, as wife of William Hoy, and also another name. Sources: 1) A Parish Register in Earlston shows the birth of a Rachel Learment / Lermont to a JOHN LEARMENT. 2) The name is also given as Rachel Larment on a headstone erected by William Hoy in memory of his son John. Someone has later added "And of William Hoy etc. And of RL his wife etc." 3) In 1915, RJ Hoy filled out a questionnaire for The Presbyterian History Society. (CA Hoy gave us a copy of a precis of the data.) It states that his father was Rev. A Hoy and that his father was William Hoy of Hume Mill with a wife Rachel, daughter of JAMES HEATLEY of Duns. (Duns is north east of Greenlaw and west of Berwick upon Tweed) Is there a possibility that her name may not have been Heatley at time of marriage? In Scottish tradition at that time, records generally showed mother's maiden name and not the married name. We do not know what would occur if remarried or had been adopted.
