In 1851 census there is a Robert Dafter with wife Mary Ann and sons E, 4 and J 2.
Also an Edward Mortimer with a grandson Thomas Cole Dafter.
In the Swindon Family History Library we found the marriage of a Robert Dafter (a Hawker) to an Elizabeth Kibblewhite in 1837 in Broad Blunsden with a father Robert Dafter (a Hawker).
Also the burial of an Elizabeth Dafter in 1840 in Broad Blunsden, abode Broad Blunsden.

Hilary Thompson (an email contact researching Dafter) has the Marriage Cert. of a Robert Dafter, a widow (Police Officer living in Chiseldon) to Mary Ann Mortimer in 1844 at *
We assume that the Robert Dafter who married Elizabeth Kibblewhite was left a widow and then married Mary Ann Mortimer (the Mortimer name tying in with Edward Mortimer through g'son Thomas Cole Dafter, and Cole tying in with gma maiden name.
IGI found an Edward Mortimer born about 1771 marrying in 1813 in Ogbourne St George an Ann Cole born about 1780 IGI FN 455334 (sealings for dead) with children also SCN 455333 (sealings for dead) and FN 447989 (endowments for dead) (Edward Mortimer died about 1858 and Ann Mortimer (Cole) about 1842)

Is this Thomas Cole Dafter b Mar q 1869 St. Luke 1b 708 (FBMD)? Record shows death as 14 Oct 1940 in Lancashire. Thomas C. 71 Lincoln 7a 1183 (fmp). 7 May 1887 enlisted. Father as Thomas Dafter living at 7 Dorinda Street, Brides Street, Barnsbury, London.
Thomas in army is as Daffee aged 20 b London, St Lukes in 1891 census on April 5
